Name droppers: Locals shine in the world of academics

Boston University awarded academic degrees to 2,286 students in January 2020. Among the graduates was Margaret Ji of Davis, who received a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese language and literature and comparative literature, Summa Cum Laude.

Abigail Thompson, chair of the mathematics department at the UC Davis, has been recognized by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni as a Hero of Intellectual Freedom.

365体育投注Thompson challenged the University of California’s initiative to use diversity statements, in which faculty applicants detail their contributions to diversity and equity, as an initial screen to determine which candidates may progress to further review of their credentials. Thompson’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 19, “,” garnered national attention.

“ACTA is proud to honor the campus heroes who pull our colleges and universities back to the unfettered freedom of thought that is the lifeblood of a traditional liberal arts education,” said Michael Poliakoff, president of ACTA.

Thompson will deliver the keynote address at ACTA’s ATHENA Roundtable Conference on Nov. 13.

Washington University in St. Louis named Emily Lopez-Ichikawa of Davis to the dean’s list for the fall 2019 semester. Lopez-Ichikawa is enrolled in the university’s McKelvey School of Engineering.

To qualify for the dean’s list at McKelvey, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and complete at least 12 graded units.

Washington University draws students to St. Louis from more than 100 countries and all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The total student body is more than 15,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. The university offers more than 90 programs and almost 1,500 courses leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Two local residents made the academic deans’ list at Azusa Pacific University. These students are honored for a fall 2019 grade-point average of 3.5 or better. A total of 2,172 students have received this honor.

Isabella Jimenez of Winters, earned the honor while majoring in social work, and Mireya Smith of West Sacramento is a psychology major.
