FC Davis crowns All-Area soccer squads, players

Breathing some life back into what’s been a mostly dormant sports scene this last month, local National Premier Soccer League squad FC Davis released its inaugural All-Area Awards for regional high-school athletes and teams this past week.

The Davis High girls snared FCD’s Ladies Team of the Year distinction after finishing 12-2-3 to win their sixth consecutive Delta League title.

Earning the Golden Lions’ Boys Team of the Year accolade was Will C. Wood (Vacaville). The Wildcats compiled a stellar 15-10-2 season in which they made it to the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Wood’s Kobe Rolling was named Woodstock’s Pizza Boys Player of the Year. The skillful and versatile junior midfielder scored 17 goals while adding 15 assists and helped his Wildcats battle through an always tough Mon

365体育投注Snagging Woodstock’s Girls Player of the Year tag was Blue Devil Lily Byrne.

The third-year varsity starter for coach Sara Stone’s squad capped her senior season as one of Davis’ leading scorers.

365体育投注Headed to Colorado College where she plans to ski and play soccer for the Tigers next fall, Byrne was a wizard on the field for the Blue Devils. With an ability to play multiple positions, the 5-foot-6 speed demon punished Delta League opponents and helped secure DHS another No.1 overall seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Allan Espinoza

365体育投注Girls Coach of the Year honors went to Woodland High’s Andres Olmedo, whose Lady Wolves ended 2020 at 16-5-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the Tri-County Conference. Dixon coach Allan Espinoza was named the top boys mentor in the area after leading the Rams 11-6-2 campaign and a Golden Empire League title.

Lily Byrne

Q: How do you feel the season went for Davis?

A: For a young team that a lot of people weren’t expecting much of, we were able to win the Delta League and put together some awesome come-from-behind victories. Not to mention, the team chemistry was awesome.

Q: What was your most memorable moment from the 2019-20 season?

A: Dog-pile celebration after scoring against Franklin away.

Q: What is one thing you would change about high school soccer?

A:365体育投注 Playing on a grass field instead of artificial turf and moving the season to spring or fall.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Mashed potatoes.

Q: Who is your favorite musical artist?

Q: One place you want to visit?

A: Nepal.

A: Nike.

Q: What do you plan to study in college?

Q: How do you feel this season went for yourself?

A: Awesome! I set a goal with my sister Kylie Rolling (twin) to win Monticello Empire League MVP honors, and we accomplished this together. We’ve been told this is the first time (that has) ever happened. I got interviewed by local KUIC radio and that was really fun.

Q: What was your most memorable moment from the 2019-20 season?

A:365体育投注 Assisting our backup goalkeeper as he scored the game-winning goal in the first round of the CIF Section playoffs.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school soccer?

A: The seniors on my team! They were a big part of my success this season. As a junior, I get one more run at the CIF title.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Mexican food.

Q: Who is your favorite musical artist?

A: Roddy Rich or Tory Lanez.

Q: One place you want to visit?

A: The Bahamas.

Q: Nike or Adidas?

A: Nike.

Q: What do you plan to study in college?

A: Fire science or education.

Q: What are your goals for next season?

A: As a senior next year, I plan to win the CIF Section title.

Notes: The 2020 High School All-Area boys and girls teams were selected by fans, who cast nearly 12,000 online votes in under a week for FC Davis’ top local high-school stars. Scheduled to host San Francisco heavyweight El Farolito on March 28, the Golden Lions’ NPSL season has been suspended indefinitely in the wake of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. FCD held an 0-1-1 record before the season was put on hold.
